Search Engine Optimization (SEO)

If you have used the internet you know about search engines. If you have had a website any length of time you will soon come to realize that, despite being told you can get on the first page of Google. It is not so easy.

Do the maths, billions of websites all want to be at the top under specific words and search terms? Clearly, only an elite group is going to succeed. You can be part of that group, but there is no quick fix, magic program, instant answer to this one. We can show you how to succeed and get tons of targeted traffic, but you will need to:

  • Understand your subject
  • Build Quality Content
  • Research Keywords
  • Understand the rules to Search Engine Marketing
  • Do not try to cheat
  • Be patient

Firstly, although there are thousands of search engines and directories, we only want to concern ourselves with the main players and so, we are mainly interested in getting very good search engine results on:

Google works on a system called page rank, so each website is awarded page rank based on the criteria Google is looking for. You can download the free Google toolbar: http://toolbar.google.com/ which will then show you the page rank of every website you visit.

Whatever you do, do not pay for search engine results via a company or by buying a program. There was a time when certain programs were useful, but those days are long gone and yet many people still buy these services. Most SEO professionals agree not to register your website with the search engines ever. The exception to this rule is directories run by real people such as open directory www.dmoz.com as they will not find and add your site.

The other search engines will find and scan (spider) your website, picking out various keywords and content and appraising it based on certain criteria. Your job is to make sure your website offers what they are looking for, and does not get penalized for trying to trick them to get higher rankings.

The following is a list of what to do, and avoid when building any website page.

Do’s

  1. Use search engine friendly software (Global 7 website building program was built by search engine specialists, so that you can easily give the search engines what they are looking for)
  2. Research Keywords and phrases, then optimize these into the content of each web page, Page Heading, Description and keywords
  3. Ensure each page is a minimum of 30 lines long (more text is preferable), with understandable and useful content.
  4. Ensure each page if possible, has a number of internal links, linking to other pages of your website
  5. Build 100 quality links to your website. Ensure you only ask websites with Google page rank of 4 or above and only link back if you need to.
  6. Add description text to images.
  7. Keep adding fresh content daily if possible. Build a large quality website.

Many Techniques that try and trick the search engines to increasing your website ranking, can lead to your website being penalized, dropping rankings or even banned by some search engines. It is not worth it, you want an effective website long term, so:

 Don’ts

  1. Keyword stuff pages, that is use the same keyword in a page more than 8%. If you put in keyword density into www.google.com you will find many free websites that can assess your keyword density for any page.
  2. Put on thousands of links. If in anyway your website resembles a link farm you can be penalized.
  3. Copy other websites text or images. Apart from being illegal in most cases, your website needs fresh unique content. If you do find a website with some very good content, ask them, do a deal, and help each other (trade partner) this will prove much more successful in the long term.
  4. Buy numerous domain names and point them to your main website. You can though, build multiple websites on specific sub categories of your main subject and link to your main website.
  5. Hidden text and hidden links will not help your page rank.
  6. Cloaking is having two different pages, one seen by the search engines and the other by the person browsing your website. This “trick” could get your site banned.
  7. Submit your website to the search engines.

Now that you have a good idea of what to do and what to avoid, we are going to explain in detail some of the most important SEO techniques
