Choose your Domain
The Domain is the website address or URL (Unique Resource Location) an example is www.thepanamalawyer.com Some thought should be given to your name, as you are likely to build your website upon such a name and keep it for a considerable time. Normally you would choose the name of your business such as www.offshorebusinessportal.com or the name of a product such as www.secretsofoffshoreecommerce.com you may find that somebody already owns the domain you want. So you either have to change your company or product name or find a suitable alternative. Depending on what software you are going to use, you would be wise to register your Domain with your website host. Within this program we recommend a number of companies depending on which business model you choose. It is important that you own the domain. There are a number of options as to how you get your website built but you can always own your domains and you should, why?. Because if you purchase a website building package from a website designer (including a domain) and fall out with them, then you can be held to ransom for your complete website business. If you own the domain, all you need to do is login to your account and change the nameservers to whoever is hosting your website. We do not suggest that you register similar domains and have them pointing to your website, as this is penalized by some search engines. What extension should you use for your domain? Well if your business is always going to be geographically restricted to one country then you could purchase a .co.uk domain (UK) or if it is for Germany .de etc. However as we recommend going for a global market .com extensions will be far the most successful for your global business. Many sharp entrepreneurs set new businesses up on the basis of a good domain name they have previously purchased. We suggest you try to find a .com domain with your main subject within it, but not too long. Also be inventive and try similar combinations, consider using hyphens to get good domains for example: www.website-design-projects.com To find out what domains are available go to www.whois.com or www.godaddy.com Once you have chosen a domain name you will need to purchase it and start building your website.
